Changing your charity's purposes
You must obtain Charity Commission authority to change your charity’s purposes.
The Charities Act 2022 has changed the legal test we apply when considering requests for authority.
The Commission must have regard to:
- the purposes of the company when it was established, if and so far as they are reasonably ascertainable,
- the desirability of securing that the purposes of the company are, so far as reasonably practicable, similar to the purposes being altered, and
- the need for the company to have purposes which are suitable and effective in the light of current social and economic circumstances.
You can find more information about what you need to tell us in our guidance.
